West Virginia Mission Trip 2012

To the Place, Where WE Belong: West Virginia

PPC Mission Trip, June 16-23, 2012, Oak Hill, West Virginia

Progress Report:

GATHERING SUPPORTWV Map progress week 3

We need the support of the entire congregation to get to West Virginia and back and we are so grateful for all your support. So far, 31 families have agreed to sponsor part of the trip.  There are still many ways that you can support the trip, including:

  • Organizing a parking lot send-off for the mission team on June 16th
  • Organizing a parking lot welcome home team for the mission team on June 23rd
  • Making a gift for the residents we’ll serve (do you knit or crochet or like to do another craft)-a small shawl, afghan, or piece of art for their home would be lovely
  • Becoming a prayer partner. We'll email regular updates on what part of trip preparations need prayer and then daily updates during the trip about on how we need prayer.

Pledge your support NOW by visiting our WV map in Fellowship Hall.  There are plenty of opportunities for individuals and families of all ages to get involved.

Summerlee 133

Where are we going? We will be staying at Summerlee Presbyterian Church in Oak Hill, WV. They will provide 25 camping cots and we are welcome to bring air mattresses. We will have multiple sleeping rooms and access to other gathering spaces. They have 2 showers on-site as well as a full kitchen (that includes dishes, pot and pans, microwaves, coffee pots, toasters, grills, refrigerators and stoves) in which we will be able to cook meals.

Oak Hill is a small town in Fayette County, WV.  The town was settled in 1820 and was incorporated in 1905.  It is located in West Virginia's southern coalfields and, as such, coal mining has played a primary role in the town's history.  The town also has a history of light manufacturing.  Nearly 15% of families and nearly 28% of children live below the poverty line.

Why should WE get involved? This is an opportunity to respond to Christ’s call to care for the disadvantaged and downtrodden. It’s a chance to say, “Here I am, Lord, send me!” It’s also a chance to make new friendships in the congregation and strengthen the ties that bind us together as a family of faith.
